Kevin Hipkins Royale Orchids. It is our sad duty to inform everyone of his passing

It is our sad duty to inform everyone of the passing of Kevin Hipkins,
owner of Royale Orchids, on Saturday 3rd March in hospital from a heart attack.
It seems there are very few photos of Kevin floating around so I dug up this one from 6 years ago.

Committal Details

Committal service will be held at Palmdale Crematorium, Hillside Chapel, Palmdale Rd, Palmdale, NSW, Australia on Monday, 12th March 2018 at 12:30 PM.

In the formative days of AON Kevin was a great help and he will be missed as one of the last iconic growers in a diminishing orchid trade.

From facebook and Jodi

Hi to everyone who follows this page. Jody and I are very sad to announce that Kevin Hipkins - owner of Royale Orchids - passed away on Saturday March 3rd after a brief illness. As many of you are aware, Kevin struggled significantly with several health issues related to his diabetes but always with his wicked sense of humour and irascibility in tact. I’m sure he went out of this world the way he lived his entire life - on his own terms. His knowledge of hybridisation and what might occur was astonishing. And he used that to great effect breeding trotting horses where he also won many an award for his breeding lines. Working at the nursery, for me, was always a joy. The cymbidium world is more colourful, fragrant and less “round” because of him. Vale Kevin
Alice, Ray, Janine and everybody at Royale Orchids would like to thank you all for your kind words and condolences during this difficult time. Many of you are asking about information regarding the funeral and we will post the details here once they are finalised. We are all heartbroken by the sudden passing of Kevin and still coming to terms with the loss, he was a larger than life character who spoke his mind and was never backwards in coming forward, his knowledge and contribution to orchid growing and hybridisation was immense and will leave a large void in the orchid growing community.

From The Royale Orchids Website

Royale Orchids started as a cut flower Cymbidium operation some 40 years ago by the founders, Roy and Alice Hipkins, hence the name 'ROYALE'.

From a backyard hobbyist the company has developed into the largest most diverse specialist orchid nursery in NSW.

The nursery was relocated some 6 years ago from Woy Woy to a 38 acre rural property at Peats Ridge, an area which is renowned for its clean air and spring water, and is under the guidance of Kevin Hipkins.

Thankyou for your acknowledgement of Kevin’s passing Wayne. I bought many plants from him in the late 80s and early 90s when Royale Orchids was located in Gosford. In fact, the vast majority of my collection came from him. I have very fond memories of staying as his guest there on 2 occasions. He, and Alan Moon, from The Eric Young Foundation, stayed with me when they came to Perth for an Australian Orchid Conference in the early 90s. Both of them were the life of many a party! I found Kevin to be an exceptionally generous and warm person. I learnt a lot about orchids and how best to grow them from him. He was a trail blazer in orchid growing in Australia, especially in the unusual. His legacy will be apparent for many years to come.
